Do Not Like

Today’s mini rant is being brought to you by the “like” and/or favorite button. It depends on what social media site you use.

Now, some context for the rant… Yesterday I posted the beginning of a short story on the site here. I had started that story a long time ago, and never got around to posting it. I had shared with a few friends when I originally wrote it. They never really said anything about it other than “I like it.”

So here’s the thing. If I share something and ask for your opinion, then I actually expect feedback. Hitting a like button is not proper feedback. All that tells me is that you saw the tweet or facebook post. It does not tell me if you actually read the story, or actually liked the story itself.

I want to improve my writing. I want to know that people actually enjoy the things that I write, and want to read more.

Social media has been reduced to likes and faves. Actual words are replaced by emojis.

Come on, people. Use your words. I’m trying to.
